The system made me feel like a file number, but the Hurtado Collective treated me like a peer. I didn't need another therapist; I needed a navigator who knew how to fight for my autonomy. They helped me find my voice when I thought I’d lost it

FAQs
LEGAL DISCLOSURE: We are a volunteer collective (Social Security Act - SGA Regulations). All advocates undergo background checks with written consent (California ICRAA) and are mandatory reporters under California law (CA W&I Code § 15630 & CA Penal Code § 11165.7), regardless of the state where they or their peer/mentee are located. We provide peer-led advocacy and navigation; we are not licensed medical or legal professionals and do not provide legal or medical advice (CA Bus. & Prof. Code § 6125).
Is this a medical or legal service?
No. We are a peer-to-peer collective. While our "Arsenal" includes people who have been doctors, lawyers, and licensed psychotherapists, we are medically retired and not acting in those professional roles here. We do not provide second opinions, medication management, or legal representation.
What we provide is Strategic Peer Advocacy.
We aren't "case managers" or social workers; we are your strategic partners. In this collective, an advocate is:
A Shield: We stand between you and the bureaucracy that tries to grind you down.
A Translator: We use our professional backgrounds to translate the legal and medical jargon that is often used to confuse or sideline you.
A Professional Witness: We don't speak for you (unless you want us to or need us to); we ensure the room stays quiet enough for you to be heard.
We are here to correct the wrongs. Many of us have been victims of a system that took advantage of our silence, and those days are over. We speak the "Expert" language fluently, but we use it solely to protect your dignity and ensure your autonomy remains the central authority in the room.
How much does this cost?
We are a volunteer-led, pro-bono collective. We do not charge fees and we do not take insurance. This is our way of giving back to the community, shared one "spoon" at a time as our health permits.
Why is everything remote?
As a collective of disabled and or senior (retired or semi retired) professionals, we value accessibility and energy management. By meeting via video, text, and email, we remove the physical barriers for both our mentors and our peers/mentees.
What happens if you can't help me?
If your needs fall outside our "Arsenal" of lived experience or require clinical intervention, we will do our best to help you find the right professional resources or community organizations that can.
What specific services do you offer?
We don’t offer "services" in the traditional sense. We don’t have a brochure or a price list because we aren’t a business. Instead, we offer Adaptive Mentorship tailored entirely to the specific hurdles you are facing.
Because our "Arsenal" includes experts in Law, Medicine, HR, Executive Leadership, and Clinical Psychology, we can collaborate with you on high-level goals that a typical "case manager" or “social worker” wouldn't touch. Depending on your needs and our current capacity, this might look like:
Career & Re-entry Strategy: If you are returning to work as a senior or navigating with a disability, we use our HR background to help with resume architecture, interview prep, and understanding your ADA rights. We’ve been the gatekeepers; we know how to help you get past them.
Life Navigation: Drawing from our psychotherapy experience, we offer mentorship for those navigating the trauma of a new diagnosis or a major life transition. We help you find your footing when the ground has shifted.
Systems Advocacy: Helping you prepare for Fiduciary meetings, Special Needs Trust (SNT) discussions, or medical appointments where you need to ensure your voice remains the authority.
At the end of the day, it all depends on you. We don’t use a template because your life isn't a template. We look at what you need, we look at the "spoons" we have available in our collective, and we build a roadmap together. If we have the expertise to help you get things done, we will. If we don’t, we’ll be direct and help you find someone who does.
